Regular400

A script kept by women

For about 700 years, from the 13th century into the 20th, women in Jiangyong County in Hunan province wrote in a script of their own. Nüshu was used mainly for the local Chinese dialect, Xiangnan Tuhua, it is a logo-syllabary written in vertical columns running left to right, and it has recently been revived.

Lisa Huang designed this sans for Google’s Noto collection. The skeleton is kept simple and the counters large, choices that favor short texts and small sizes, so it sits comfortably in an app label or a museum caption. The font covers 401 characters from the Nüshu block of Unicode, with Latin alongside. 1 Regular weight.
