Nebula’s old brand face was Whitney SSm. When the streaming service from independent creators wanted a typeface it could change as it pleased, it went looking for an open design that already shared Whitney’s character and settled on Source Sans, drawn by Paul D. Hunt for Adobe.
Most of the changes make Source Sans behave like the font it replaced. The metrics were adjusted, because Source Sans runs smaller and narrower than Whitney by default. Alternates for a single-story a, an open g and a tailed l went into the stylistic sets, with the defaults set to match Whitney, and the quotes and apostrophes turned curly.
It also gained tabular figures, which Whitney SSm lacked, and an asterisk drawn after a star.
6 weights in upright and italic: Light, Book, Medium, Semibold, Bold and Black, with Book as the regular. Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, small caps and old style figures, 950 characters per style. We would use it for interface text and captions, and for a house style the a, g and l alternates are the first thing we would try.
