Google commissioned Metrophobic from Vernon Adams, the English type designer who lived in San Clemente, California, and he aimed it at 2 jobs at once: legible in small text and interesting enough for a headline.
The feel is semi geometric.
It has had 2 serious revisions since. In June 2019 it was redrawn and respaced for version 3.100, and in January 2023 version 3.200 added Vietnamese and adjusted the horizontal spacing for easier reading. So the file you get now is better made than the original 2011 release.
1 Regular style only. Use it for a website’s body and headings both, if you can live without bold; otherwise pair it with a heavier sans for titles.
