Stones by the Orkhon river
In 1889 the first inscriptions in this alphabet turned up on the banks of the Orkhon river in Mongolia, and the script took the river’s name. Orkhon runic, or Old Turkic, was used between the 8th and 13th centuries across Mongolia and Siberia to write Turkic languages. The letters look a little like Germanic runes, and like Old Hungarian, though the likeness is only on the surface.
It runs right to left, sometimes back and forth in alternate lines. Monotype’s design team drew the 78 Orkhon glyphs for Google’s Noto project with even, unmodulated strokes, and a Latin set comes with it for transliterations and notes. 1 Regular style.
