Hands, face and movement
Valerie Sutton worked out her way of writing signed languages in 1974, with small pictures in place of letters: symbols for the hands, the face and the body, set out on the page in the same spatial arrangement the signer uses, so that a reader can see the movement. It was standardized later as the International Sign Writing Alphabet, and today it transcribes some 12 sign languages, among them American, Brazilian, French, Danish and Norwegian Sign Language, plus International Sign.
The Monotype design team drew this font for Google’s Noto project, which wants every writing system on a computer. The SignWriting symbols have their own Unicode block. The script runs both vertically and horizontally, and assembling a complete sign from its parts needs software that can shape complex text, so check your layout tool before you build a lesson around it.
A Latin alphabet with the common European accents comes along in 1 Regular weight, for glosses and captions.
