A few of Istok’s first letters came out of METAFONT, the TeX community’s font language, by way of modified sources from the CM Bright family. Andrey V. Panov started there in 2008 and kept going until the design had moved a long way from that origin. The outlines are drawn in FontForge now.
The part that took real patience is the hinting. Panov wrote TrueType instructions by hand for most of the glyphs, using xgridfit, aiming at clean rendering on LCD screens, and let FontForge’s autohinter cover the rarer symbols until he could get to them, with the 2 kinds meant to look the same on screen. It is a lot of manual work for a free font. This “Web” version differs from the original Istok in its vertical metrics.
Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, with Latin, Greek and Cyrillic across 1,332 characters. Small caps are there, with a caps-to-small-caps switch, and old style and tabular figures. The italic keeps almost exactly the width of the roman.
It joined Google Fonts in July 2011 and was last updated in June 2014. We would still call it a sound, plain choice for running text in 3 alphabets.
