Sinhala keeps 2 alphabets inside 1. The “pure” set, 20 consonants and 20 vowels, covers the sounds of spoken Sinhala. A “mixed” set adds 18 more consonants, used for correct spelling, which often preserves older pronunciations, and for words from other languages. A font for the script has to carry both.
The script has been written in Sri Lanka since around 300 CE, for Sinhala, which about 15 million people speak, and for Pali and Sanskrit as well. It is an Indic abugida running left to right, and it depends on software that can shape complex text.
The Monotype design team drew this unmodulated sans for Google’s Noto collection. It supports 170 characters from the Sinhala, Basic Latin and General Punctuation blocks, and you get 9 weights from Thin to Black.
That weight range is what makes it practical for interfaces and signs: a Sinhala app can use the same hierarchy as its English version. The Latin is fairly wide, so mixed lines will run long.
