Syriac is attested from the year 6 CE. The abjad runs right to left and was used across West Asia for Syriac itself and for Aramaic, Neo-Aramaic and Turoyo, also called Surayt. Classical Syriac now survives mostly in the liturgy of the Syrian churches.
This font draws the Estrangela form of the script as a sans serif with no modulation in the stroke. Patrick Giasson and the Monotype design team made it for Google’s Noto collection.
The letters join, so your software has to handle complex text shaping. The font also covers a set of Arabic characters, and it brings Latin with its accents so a paper can quote Syriac and discuss it in English from 1 family. 2 stylistic sets and stylistic alternates add variant forms.
9 weights from Thin to Black, which is unusual for a script this specialized. Regular or Medium for reading, and the heavier ones for headings on a church or community website.
