Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Xixia, the lost script

From 1036 to 1502 the Tangut language was widely written in China, in a script of nearly 6,000 characters. The language is extinct now. Tangut, also called Xixia, looks like Chinese at first glance. It is unrelated. It is a logo-syllabary of its own, written in vertical columns that run from left to right.

Google’s Noto project, which aims to cover every modern and ancient writing system, gave it this serif design, with modulated strokes. The font holds 6,896 characters from 2 Unicode blocks, Tangut and Tangut Components.

Who needs it? Historians, linguists, museum and archive staff, anyone digitizing a Tangut text. The Latin alongside will do for notes and captions. 1 Regular weight, on Google Fonts since November 2020.
