Square reached Google Fonts in April 2011, about 3 weeks after the rest of the Nova set, though it comes from the same source: NovaCut, a capitals-and-digits alphabet Wojciech Kalinowski drew for carving inscriptions and kept on paper and stone for years.
When that alphabet went digital in 2010 it needed a lowercase, and the letter variants he drew along the way became separate fonts, each named for a shape. NovaMono was the 7th.
Square is the one where the curves give way to corners. It runs wide, with a big lowercase, and in 1 style it suits short, technical-looking lines such as game menus and headings much better than paragraphs.
