Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Australia’s 5 main school handwriting models all go back to 1990, when the Australian Education Council recommended that every school adopt a style based on the Scottish calligrapher Tom Gourdie’s Simple Modern Hand. The point was consistency, so that moving across a state line would not cost a child their handwriting. The states drifted apart anyway, each teaching its own version, locally called script, and Queensland’s is the model behind this font.
Look at the G first. It is open, with no crossbar, and the I carries serifs, 2 of its oddities. The rest is a slanted modern cursive with print capitals and loopless extenders, semi-connected so the pen lifts after a descender. The f stands apart with a straight descender, the z is wide and open and drops below the line, and the Y has a shape all its own.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione of TypeTogether drew it in 4 weights, Thin to Regular; the Regular is what we would put on a classroom wall.
