The d gets a little exit stroke and the a does not, even in the alphabet Tasmanian beginners start with. Rules that small are what separate 1 Australian state’s handwriting from the next, and Playwrite AU TAS follows the Tasmanian one, the Tasmania Handwriting Style that the state’s Department of Education published in 2009 and revised in 2016.
They all began in the same place. In 1990 the Australian Education Council asked every school in the country to teach a style based on Tom Gourdie’s Simple Modern Hand, so a child moving between states would not have to relearn how to write. The 5 main models have drifted apart since then.
Tasmania’s version is slanted, loopless and only partly joined, with print capitals. Letters with descenders do not connect to the next letter and neither does the s; the gaps keep the hand quick. Look for the open G, the f standing apart on a curved descender, closed bowls on the b and the p, an r and a z with an italic cut, and a q that ends on a small exit stroke.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione built it for TypeTogether’s Playwrite series, and it went up on Google Fonts in May 2024 in 4 weights from Thin to Regular. Teachers get a sibling with ruled guide lines, Playwrite AU TAS Guides. A parent writing a lunchbox note can use this one as it is.
