In Germany each state decides how its primary schools teach handwriting, and in 2010 the Grundschulverband, the Association of Primary Schools, put forward a model that starts from print letters. They called it Grundschrift. Children write separate letters, and some of them carry a small exit stroke, a Häkchen, that hints at joining without ever joining. Bremen and Hamburg are among the states that allow it next to the older cursive models, and it is taught in 10% of German schools.
Playwrite DE Grund is TypeTogether’s font of that model. Veronika Burian and José Scaglione made it as part of Playwrite, a set of school fonts that came out of Primarium, their record of how children are taught to write in primary schools around the world.
Letters a German teacher will know
- R is made in 2 strokes, and M has its middle point raised
- k is 2 strokes too
- f drops a straight descender
- several lowercase letters keep the exit stroke
Nothing connects. It is a precursive and stays one.
The weights run from Thin at 100 to Regular at 400. There is no bold and no italic, so leave the B and I buttons in your word processor alone, they only fake a style that looks worse. For worksheets there is a sibling, Playwrite DE Grund Guides, that adds guide lines for children learning the shapes, and the character set reaches over 150 Latin-based languages.
