Of the 23 handwriting methods in the National Handwriting Association’s 2013 guide for teachers in England, 13 were joined or semi-joined modern cursives: Nelson, Jarman, Marion Richardson, Sassoon-Williams, Tom Gourdie’s Modern Hand and more. They trace back to the Italic Handwriting Revival of the early 1900s and to Alfred Fairbank (1895–1982), who wanted children to learn a simplified italic built on the old chancery hands, quicker than the English Roundhand of 19th century offices and schoolrooms.
Playwrite GB J is the fully joined branch of that line.
How it writes
Ascenders are short and loopless, while the descenders loop. Capitals are simplified print forms, with an open G that has no crossbar and an M on plain legs. The f gives it away, its ascender needs the pen lifted, and the r and the z take an italic cursive shape.
It comes upright and slanted, so the download holds 8 files, Thin to Regular with an italic for each, and the slanted version keeps the upright’s width exactly. Veronika Burian and José Scaglione built it for TypeTogether, and Google added it in May 2024.
A thank-you card in the slanted Regular would look at home. A reading sheet for a class learning this very hand is the better use.
