A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Reginald Dwayne Betts wrote the poems for The Redaction by blacking out words in legal briefs until verse was left, and this typeface was made to set those poems. The briefs came from Civil Rights Corps cases over people jailed when they were too poor to settle court fines and fees. Titus Kaphar made portraits for the same show, at MoMA PS1.
Jeremy Mickel of MCKL drew it, brought in by Forest Young, and the 2 started from the type the briefs themselves were set in, the Times New Roman of ordinary U.S. filings and the New Century Schoolbook of the Supreme Court. Teardrops were rounded off, acute shapes sharpened.
This page is the base grade, the clean one. 6 numbered grades follow it, 10 to 100, each a step further into the look of a document copied and faxed once too often, and only this first one is built for comfortable reading.
There are 3 styles, Regular, Italic and Bold, and the italic sets a little narrower than the roman.
Poems and wall texts belong in this grade, in our view, with a worn grade on the title above them.
