Written on a wooden board
In the Kano region of Nigeria, and across the border in Niger, Arabic is written on wooden boards with a sharpened stick. The local word for that stick is alkalami, from the Arabic qalam, and the stick is what gives this style its look.
Everything heavy happens on the baseline. That horizontal stroke is thick and solid, while the ascenders and the small upright teeth of letters stay very thin beside it, and the swashes and descenders drop deep below the line. A page of it reads as a nearly black rectangle, and we find that the most striking thing about it. The vowel marks and other diacritics are small and sit close to the letters, which keeps that block dense.
Becca Hirsbrunner Spalinger drew it at SIL International. Give it a generous line height, or the deep descenders of 1 line will collide with the next. 1 Regular weight, with Latin included and 6 stylistic sets.
