Old tin can labels gave Johan Kallas and Mihkel Virkus the starting point, the lettering on canned goods packaging from the 20th century, and they mixed in a flirt with medieval letterforms. The result is broad and confident: a high x-height and letters that spread wide, so much that a word in Revalia needs far more room than the same word in a standard sans.
The 2 Estonian designers released 3 Google Fonts families together in 2012. Ewert came first, a slab wood type based on the cultural maps of the Estonian artist Olev Soans; Revalia followed in March; Meie Script, after Estonia’s 1910 handwriting standard, arrived in August.
1 Regular style. For a jar label or a shop sign, set it in short words and let it spread.
