Old Town Bakery reopens
The letters go back to a 1970s alphabet by the Ukrainian designer Oleg Snarsky, printed in his 1979 book of display alphabets for advertising and decorative work and later put up as the signage of Teremky metro station in Kyiv. Snarsky reached a long way back for it. His forms call up ustav and semi-ustav, the Cyrillic book hands of the 11th to 16th centuries, the Ruthenian period.
In 2011 the Russian designer Denis Masharov, working with Vladimir Rabdu, digitized the alphabet and drew a new Latin to go beside the Cyrillic. The name means lion.
What you get is a single Regular, 451 characters, with no OpenType features to switch on. The designers pitch it at lettering and short texts, and it sets wide, so a 4 word title fills a line quickly. On a poster or a Cyrillic book cover it carries some history with it; for a paragraph it would be heavy going.
