A Note On The Page

Sacramento · Regular

A short letter, set in the family.

Thursday afternoon

Dear Alex,

I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.

See you there.

Greetings from the motor court

The model for Sacramento is brochure lettering of the 1950s and 1960s, the hand-drawn script that lettering artists put on brochures in those years. Brian J. Bonislawsky kept it monoline, with an even stroke throughout, and semi-connected, so some letters join and some do not. It sits between formal and casual, and still has enough presence for a headline.

Bonislawsky studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and then founded Astigmatic, short for Astigmatic One Eye Typographic Institute. More than 25 years of type, lettering, packaging, apparel and branding work followed, along with Stiggy & Sands, a retro Americana lettering label he runs with Jim Lyles, and Astigmatic has 58 families on Google Fonts.

The lowercase is tiny next to the capitals, under half their height. Set it big. Title case shows it off better than a line of capitals would.
