A Note On The Page

Smooch · Regular

A short letter, set in the family.

Thursday afternoon

Dear Alex,

I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.

See you there.

Rob Leuschke has spent close to 40 years lettering packaging, logos and greeting cards from his TypeSETit studio near St. Louis, and Smooch reads like it came off that desk. It is a fast brush script, and its strokes are stranded, the separate hairs of the brush showing in them.

Next to his other hand-lettered scripts it sits a little heavier. The design dates from 2017 and reached Google’s library in late 2021.

Where it gets useful is in the OpenType menu. Smooch has initial and final forms, so a word can start and end with a proper entry and exit stroke, plus swashes, stylistic alternates and 4 stylistic sets. The lowercase is small and the letters narrow, so a short phrase sits compactly under a big capital.

Leuschke also drew a companion, Smooch Sans, first as a truncated sans to go with the script and later as a variable family of 9 weights.
