Charles Bluemlein’s scripts used to be shown off in Higgins Ink catalogs, back when lettering was a trade done by hand. New York City alone counted some 200 working hand letterers between the early 1930s and World War II, before photo lettering and then digital type wiped the job out.
Bluemlein’s method was to take collected signatures and enlarge each into a full script. The finished designs no longer looked like anybody’s signature, so he made up names for them, and the Monsieur on this page is 1 of those inventions. Alejandro Paul revived the collection at Sudtipos in expanded digital versions and kept Bluemlein’s invented names on purpose.
The lowercase is minute, an x stands at about a sixth of the font’s body height, and the capitals and ascenders carry all the height, so a name is read mostly by its first letter. Set it large, give it a whole line to itself, and do not even think about all caps.
