Canonical paid for this family in 2010 and 2011 so that Ubuntu would have a voice of its own in every menu, button and dialog box. Dalton Maag did the design and the engineering.
That job shaped the letters. They were hinted by hand for clarity on desktop and mobile screens, so interface text at small pixel sizes stays crisp. And the language coverage was meant to keep growing, since the Ubuntu idea was that a user should be able to run the software in the language of their choice; this release covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic with their extended sets, 1,194 characters per style.
It is the face of the Ubuntu desktop, so is it too tied to that for a brand that is not Ubuntu? A fair worry for a logo. For documentation or an app interface the association hurts less.
There are 8 styles, Light, Regular, Medium and Bold with an italic for each, and the italics are slightly narrower than the romans. Tabular figures and fractions are in the feature set, useful in settings panels and tables.
