Small sizes on a poor screen were the hard case Varta was built around. Joana Correia, Viktoriya Grabowska and Eben Sorkin designed it at Sorkin Type to render cleanly very small and on low-quality displays as well as good ones, and that requirement sits at the top of its brief.
The personality only comes through when it gets bigger. At heading sizes Varta turns warm and approachable; in a caption it keeps quiet and crisp. That double life is why the designers list sign systems and packaging next to editorial work and long reading on screen as its jobs.
Its OpenType kit is what you want for that range. Old style and lining figures, tabular and proportional spacing, fractions, subscripts and superscripts are all there, and discretionary ligatures for a display line. The 5 weights go from Light to Bold, with Vietnamese in the Latin.
We would put it on a transit map or an app’s settings screen before a magazine cover.
