The hand painted signs of the Mumbai local railway gave Catherine Leigh Schmidt the look for Yatra One. She kept the quirks of brush painted lettering: angular cuts, open knots, heavy weight and high contrast.
The odd part is the Latin. Its strokes follow a Devanagari brush angle, so English words are written with the same pen, as it were, as the Hindi or Marathi beside them. And being a Mumbai font at heart, Yatra includes a few basic Marathi alternates.
1 heavy style, for headlines and signs. A street food stall’s menu board is the obvious match.
