Zalando, the Berlin fashion retailer, wanted a typeface of its own, and in 2025 Jakob Ekelund of KH Type in Stockholm drew it with the company’s brand and product design teams. It reached Google Fonts that same summer.
The base is a grotesque sans, with a few quirks let in to give it what the brief called attitude. Flexibility and accessibility were the other goals, since 1 face has to cover a shop, an app and the campaigns around them. So the family is large: 8 weights between Extra Light (200) and Black (900), each with its italic, and the italics run the same width as the uprights so a slanted word never shifts the line.
For a shop interface the details count more than the shapes. Tabular figures line up prices in a column, proportional figures keep them tidy in a sentence, and there are fractions, superscripts and subscripts, case sensitive punctuation for all-caps buttons, and 3 stylistic sets.
We’d use Regular and Medium for the interface and save Black for a sale banner.
