Ẹ káàbọ̀ to the night market
Raphael Alẹ́gbẹ́lẹ́yẹ̀’s own surname is a fair test for a display font, with its tone marks riding on dotted vowels, and Agbalumo sets it without fuss. That was the point. The face was made to represent African languages, both those written in Latin, with the hooked letters and open vowels they need, and those written in the Ge’ez script. European languages and Vietnamese ride along. Yikun Ayalew shares the design credit with Alẹ́gbẹ́lẹ́yẹ̀, and Eben Sorkin’s Sorkin Type produced it.
The shapes came from a brush pen. Letters are curvy and heavy and sit close together, and the mood is cute, a word the makers use themselves. There is only 1 weight, but contextual alternates and 6 stylistic sets give a long headline some variety.
We would put it on a jar label or a festival poster. In a paragraph its chunkiness gets tiring by the second line.
