Type *Shelf 14* with the asterisks and this font prints a Code 39 barcode a scanner can read, with the same text in plain letters underneath. The asterisks are the start and stop characters, and you have to include them.

The Code 39 set from the Libre Barcode project has 4 fonts. The plain one only encodes digits, capital letters, the space and a handful of symbols. Extended accepts full ASCII, lowercase included, and Extended Text, this one, adds the human-readable line.

A warning before you print 1,000 labels. Some scanners are not set up to read extended Code 39, and they will read “Hello” as “H+E+L+L+O”. If yours is one of them, keep to capitals and digits.

Lasse Fister, a font and web developer in Nuremberg, leads the project, and the fonts are produced by its own generator scripts.
