Regular, Mittel, Fett, Satt. Luigi Gorlero gave 3 of the 4 weights of Apfel Grotezk German names, and the family name spells grotesk with a z.
The letters themselves are less stern than the names. Collletttivo, the collective that publishes it, calls it round and airy and places it between the neo-grotesques and the geometric faces, with easy curves and an exaggerated x-height. That last part is easy to confirm: the lowercase x reaches 77% of the height of a capital H, so short words look big and friendly at any size.
There is a twin. Apfel Grotezk Brukt, developed with SPRINT, cuts holes of different shapes and sizes into the same letters so that a print run uses less ink. On this page are the 4 solid weights, 400, 500, 700 and 900, with 339 characters of Latin.
First released in November 2019, the family reached version 2.000 in October 2023. We would use the Fett and Satt for posters and menus and keep long reading to something with a calmer lowercase.
