Ruqaa is the compact, everyday hand of Arabic writing. Aref Ruqaa tries to catch the classical, calligraphic version of it. The calligrapher and type designer Abdullah Aref drew the Arabic letters, and Khaled Hosny, a type designer in Cairo, leads the project.
The Latin has an unusual parent. It comes from AMS Euler, the alphabet Hermann Zapf drew for setting mathematics, respaced here so it works in ordinary sentences, and that is why Google Fonts credits Zapf next to Aref and Hosny.
- 2 weights, Regular and Bold, with Arabic, Latin and Latin Extended.
Behind the scenes there are 8 stylistic sets and contextual alternates, which give some letters other shapes depending on their neighbors. A color sibling, Aref Ruqaa Ink, was added in 2022 with the colors stored inside the font itself. The plain version has been on Google Fonts since June 2016.
We would use it for a book title or a café sign in Arabic with an English line under it. For long Arabic paragraphs we would pick a plainer text face.
