In 2011 a Ukrainian type competition called Mystetsky Arsenal went looking for a face that was practical and of its moment, and also recognizably Ukrainian. Andrij Shevchenko’s entry won, took the competition’s name, and was made free for anyone. Arsenal SC is its small caps sibling, which Google added in May 2024.
Shevchenko calls the design a semi-grotesque with traditional forms. In practice that means a sans with visible contrast in the strokes, apertures neither shut nor wide open, and narrow proportions that let a lot of text fit in a line. He drew the original for body text and professional documents, and there is a lyrical streak in some of the letters that he ties to the Ukrainian character of the font.
What does a small caps version add? Typed lowercase comes out as short capitals, so a heading or a label reads as all caps without shouting, and the caps to small caps feature can bring real capitals down to match. Both Cyrillic and Latin get this treatment, Vietnamese included, across Regular and Bold with their italics. Swashes, stylistic alternates, discretionary ligatures and 2 stylistic sets are tucked in as well.
The italics are almost exactly as wide as the romans, so switching mid line will not reflow a table. Use it for running heads, menus, a bilingual program in Ukrainian and English, and keep the paragraphs for the main Arsenal family.
