Stacked conjuncts, more than 100 of them. Baloo Chettan 2 joins clusters such as ക്ക and ങ്ങ into 1 shape each, the way traditional Malayalam spelling writes them, and it has the vowel sign variants that go with those shapes.
The 6 chillu letters, ൺ ൻ ർ ൽ ൾ ൿ, are encoded as characters of their own, and the dot reph ൎ is here too. Anyone who has typed Malayalam in a font that leaves the chillus out knows why that is the first thing to check.
Maithili Shingre and Unnati Kotecha drew it; Maithili also worked on the Telugu member, Baloo Tammudu 2.
Malayalam is a script of loops, and Baloo’s soft, even stroke follows them closely, round after round, the counters staying open in Regular and Medium. At Extra Bold they tighten. Malayalam words also run long, so the heavy weights want big sizes and short lines, a film title or a 2 word headline. For anything longer, drop to Medium and give it air.
There are tabular figures and fractions in the Latin, should a poster need dates or prices.
