Chicago has its own typeface, and this is it. Patric King drew Big Shoulders as a condensed American Gothic for the Chicago Design System and the people of the city, and the City of Chicago uses it as the main face of that system. King says the tall, upright forms reference Chicago’s history of railways, political action and dance.
There are 2 optical cuts. This Display version is the large one, meant for sizes above 72 pt, and a Text cut handles smaller type. In Display the letters are tight and narrow, built to stack big headlines in little width, and they come in 9 weights from Thin to Black.
Google Fonts added the family in September 2019.
The Black at poster size, bright on a dark ground, is the look we would aim for. Thin is lovely at billboard scale and useless at anything modest.
