Patric King split each Big Shoulders style into 2 optical sizes. The Text cuts handle anything small, and the Display cuts, this one included, are drawn for sizes above 72 pt.
Big Shoulders itself is Chicago’s typeface, a condensed American Gothic made for the city’s design system. The stencil versions take the city’s history of work and protest as their subject, which suits a letter with gaps cut through it.
Google added the Stencil Display family in October 2020. 9 weights from Thin to Black, with the basic Western European accents and no more. Use it big, on a loading dock sign or a banner across a street, where a line of very narrow stencil letters can run the full width.
