Cairo started as a Latin family and had Arabic added to it. Mohamed Gaber took Titillium Web, the Latin family credited to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino, and drew a matching Arabic based on the Kufi calligraphic style.

Both halves share wide open counters and short ascenders and descenders. That keeps lines compact without hurting readability. The Arabic glyph set goes beyond Arabic itself to Farsi and Urdu.

There are 8 weights, Extra Light to Black. Gaber suggests the lighter ones for body text and the heavier ones for headlines and display, and the range makes a bilingual website or app easy to build from 1 family.

He leads the project from Cairo, the city it is named for. Google Fonts added the family in March 2019, and it has since gained a variable version.
