Lexend Exa takes up a lot of line. A sentence of small letters in it runs 39% longer than the same sentence in Arial, and every character comes with a wide margin of air on each side.
That spacing is the whole argument of Lexend. Bonnie Shaver-Troup, working as an educational therapist in Silicon Valley, found her students read and understood more once she loosened the spacing in their assignments, and she came to believe that most reading trouble, dyslexia included, is visual or perceptual, made worse by type fitted too tightly. Her method has a name, the Shaver-Troup Formulations, and Lexend is 7 families built on it. Exa is 1 of the wide ones.
Thomas Jockin drew the first Lexend widths with her; Santiago Orozco, Héctor Gómez and Superunion are credited by Google as well. Font Bureau made all the families variable on a weight axis in June 2021.
What comes in the box:
- 9 weights, Thin at 100 to Black at 900
- fractions, ordinals, superscripts and subscripts
- a slashed zero and 1 stylistic set
- Latin with Vietnamese
Who should set a page in it? A student whose eyes swim on a crowded worksheet, first. For everyone else we would keep it to short blocks, a caption or a sidebar, since a long paragraph at this width asks a lot of scrolling.
