Siliguri is a city in West Bengal, and this is the Bengali branch of the Indian Type Foundry’s Hind system. Hind runs to 9 families that match each other in style, 1 for each of these scripts used across Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka: Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Sinhala. Jyotish Sonowal designed the Bengali, and ITF published it in 2015.
Built for interfaces
Hind was made with user interfaces in mind. The construction is humanist, the strokes look close to monoline, and most of them end flat, sheared horizontally or vertically and only rarely on a diagonal, which keeps the shapes between letters clean. The apertures are open. On a phone screen that adds up to text that holds together.
The 2 scripts were scaled against each other with care. The Bengali headline sits at about the height of the Latin capitals, and as the weight goes up, the headline grows relative to the caps, the same way the Latin lowercase does. The Bengali includes many conjuncts, and the Latin follows the Adobe Latin 3 character set, so English and the other Western European languages are covered.
5 weights, Light to Bold. For a banking app or a news site in Bengali with English menus, Regular for text and Semi Bold for labels would be our starting point.
