Chenla was the Chinese name for a state that ruled parts of what is now Cambodia from about the late 6th to the early 9th century, before Angkor. Danh Hong borrowed it for this Khmer font, which first went out as NiDA Chenla.
Hong’s long run of Khmer and Southeast Asian fonts ties in with KhmerOS, a project that wants Cambodians learning and working on computers in Khmer. Chenla is 1 of about 20 Khmer families of his on Google Fonts, next to names like Angkor, Bokor and Siemreap.
Khmer stacks subscript consonants and vowel signs above and below the base letters, so the font maps only 137 characters but holds hundreds of extra shapes for those combinations. There is no Latin at all, and 1 Regular. For a Khmer headline or a shop sign, it is ready to go.
