The ice is thinning every year
1979 is the heaviest year in Climate Crisis. Satellites began measuring Arctic sea ice that year, and Daniel Coull and Eino Korkala tied the weight of their letters to the ice: thick for 1979, thinning through 2019 on data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center, then on to 2050 on forecasts from the IPCC. The lightest master stands for that 2050 forecast, when only 30% of the ice is expected to remain.
The client was Helsingin Sanomat, the largest Nordic newspaper, which commissioned it for its own editorial and marketing pages. In the variable version a Year axis drives the change, and the designers placed 8 masters along it so the in-between years thin out cleanly.
Few fonts make an argument with their outlines the way Climate Crisis does.
What you download here is a single static Regular with Latin, Cyrillic and a set of Hangul characters. It will set a strong headline on its own, but the project is about movement over time, and for an animated chart or a scrolling story you would want the variable file with its Year axis.
