Type an exclamation mark in DSEG7 Classic and you get a blank display, every segment off. Type an 8 and they all light up. Keshikan made the DSEG fonts to imitate LCD readouts, and much of the cleverness sits in characters like those, parked on the keyboard so a web page can fake real hardware with plain text.
There are 2 more tricks. The period has zero width, so a decimal point drops in between 2 digits as it would on a calculator. The colon and the space share 1 width, and swapping one for the other every second gives a blinking clock where nothing shifts sideways. Set a row of 8s in a pale color behind the live digits and you also get the faint unlit segments of a real display.
DSEG7 spells, after a fashion. A to Z in both cases are squeezed onto 7 segments, and we would trust it with “Err” or “HELLO” sooner than with anything containing an M.
This is version 0.46 from March 2020, which added the degree sign and the underscore. Light, Regular and Bold, each with an italic. The wider DSEG family has more than 50 types, Modern and Mini versions, 14-segment fonts and a set of weather icons among them.
