The Regular weight was drawn to the thickness of a real pencil line. For a worksheet that matters more than it sounds, since the model letters at the top of the page and the child’s own copies underneath end up as the same grade of line.
This is one of the AU School Handwriting Fonts, a variable family made to meet Australian education standards, and it carries the letter forms taught in Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Tina Anderson designed it, with Corey Anderson credited as typeface artist. Behind them stood a team that included Eben Sorkin, David Berlow, Dave Crossland of Google Fonts and Chris Betcher of Google for Education. Google Fonts added it in August 2024.
Overshoot, the extra height round letters usually get past the guide lines, was kept to a minimum on purpose, so an o lands where an x does and a teacher ruling up a page has fewer surprises. The character set covers every key on an English keyboard and the common math signs, which means a Year 3 sum sheet can stay in 1 font.
4 weights, Regular to Bold, with contextual alternates and 5 stylistic sets.
