Austrian school script, the Österreichische Schulschrift, was first drawn up in 1946 on the foundations of the German Sütterlin hand, then reformed several times until its latest version in 1995. Since the 2003 elementary curriculum, children are expected to write it legibly and fluently by the end of second grade.
That model comes in 2 forms, upright and slanted, and Playwrite AT has both: each of its 4 weights, Thin to Regular, has an italic. The 2 run the same width, so you can switch between them without a line reflowing.
It is a fast hand. The letters are built on ovals with medium-length extenders, and most of them join, though letters with crossbars make you lift the pen. The capitals are cursive and only partly joined. Older German writing shows through in places: the t is in the Kurrent manner, some lowercase letters tie small knots, the f drops a descender with no loop, and Z carries a crossbar.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it as part of TypeTogether’s Playwrite project, released in May 2024. Teachers get a Guides version too.
