A Note On The Page
Playwrite FR Moderne Guides · Regular
A short letter, set in the family.
Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Every character here carries its own rules, for baseline, x-height, ascenders and descenders, and the underscore prints the rules alone at word-space width, handy for building blank lines on a practice sheet. The letters on top are those of Playwrite France Moderne.
French pupils are used to writing between lines. Séyès ruling, a grid from 1892, reaches them in kindergarten at around 5, and on it they learn écriture cursive, the vertical joined hand that descends from the Lettre Ronde of the broad-nib pen.
That is the traditional hand. In 2013 the Ministère tried a reform and published 2 digital typeface families of its own in a modern cursive, Écriture A and Écriture B, and the “Moderne” in this font’s name points to that newer line.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione of TypeTogether made it, 1 Regular weight, added to Google Fonts in November 2024. If the letters refuse to join in Word, the Contextual Alternates box on the Advanced tab of the Font dialog is the fix.
