Round letters with their sides partly straightened: that is the geometric half of Encode Sans. The other half is humanist, simple letterforms with open apertures that keep text clear at small sizes. Put together they give a sans that feels friendly without going soft.
This page carries the normal width, 9 weights from Thin at 100 to Black at 900, upright only. It is 1 slice of a superfamily that runs in 5 widths, Condensed through Expanded, each with its own set of weights, plus separate small-cap families that make small caps easier to use in word processors.
Pablo Impallari and Andres Torresi drew the first version, Jacques Le Bailly refined it, and Stephen Nixon and Marc Foley later turned it into a variable font. The static files here are generously featured all the same: small caps, old style and lining figures in tabular or proportional spacing, discretionary ligatures, fractions. 687 characters, Vietnamese included.
If a project needs a single type system for a dense dashboard and a wide billboard alike, the Encode widths make that possible. We’d start with this normal width for text and reach for Condensed only when space runs out.
