Raphael Frank published the original Miriam in 1908, a Hebrew type with square, mechanical curves. Michal Sahar, a type designer in Tel Aviv, went back to it more than a century later and redrew the proportions. She stripped the parts that weren’t doing anything, softened a number of those square curves into rounder ones, and still kept enough of the old face that it reads as Miriam.
The Latin was never part of Frank’s type. Sahar drew it new, to sit at the Hebrew’s weight and rhythm, which is why a bilingual menu or sign in Miriam Libre doesn’t look like 2 fonts glued together.
4 weights, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold.
A surprise for a sans of this kind is the full set of small caps, both the usual kind and caps-to-small-caps, along with tabular figures for price lists. It is fairly wide, and I’d use it for headings, interface labels and short text, where the monoline Hebrew holds up well at smaller sizes.
