Martel came first, a Devanagari drawn with high-contrast strokes on a diagonal axis, following the pen angle most often used to write the script, and with proportions taken from traditional writing and calligraphy. Martel Sans keeps those proportions and lets the contrast go.
Dan Reynolds, who leads the project from Berlin, drew both scripts with Mathieu Réguer, the Latin an original design of their own. They meant it for immersive documents: long passages in Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit and the other languages written in Devanagari.
7 weights, Extra Light at 200 to Black at 900. There is no Medium, so the step after Regular is Semi Bold.
For a long Hindi report or a Marathi feature where the high-contrast Martel would feel too formal, this is the 1 to try, with the Black kept for headlines.
