In Hind the headline of the Devanagari, the top bar the letters hang from, stops a little short of the Latin capitals. The base characters were scaled to 94% of the Latin cap height on purpose, so a Hindi word and an English one can share a line comfortably, and the Devanagari sits easily beside the Latin lowercase too.

Indian Type Foundry in Ahmedabad first published it in 2014, with Manushi Parikh as designer, and it was built for user interfaces. The construction is humanist even though the strokes look close to monolinear. What makes it hold up on a screen:

  • stroke endings cut flat, with a horizontal or vertical shear and seldom a diagonal one
  • open apertures, and clean counter shapes between the characters
  • Devanagari vowel marks drawn toward the traditional end, while the knotted terminals inside the base letters go more contemporary
  • a Latin set for English and the other Western European languages

5 weights, Light to Bold, all upright.

In an app we would set Hindi body text in Regular and keep Semi Bold for the buttons.
