Dashboards are where this one earns a place. A table with 9 columns of figures and labels that will not fit in normal Plex Sans gets its room back in the Condensed, and nothing about the letters changes character on the way, so a report can switch between the 2 widths mid-page without anyone feeling a seam.
Plex is IBM’s own corporate typeface, developed by the company’s Brand & Experience team with Mike Abbink and the foundry Bold Monday credited, Paul van der Laan and Pieter van Rosmalen among them. IBM wanted the family to carry its history and the long-running theme of people and machines working together, and the grotesque shapes have a few engineered details for that reason. The whole set is Sans, Sans Condensed, Mono and Serif, made to be mixed.
- 14 styles here, Thin at 100 to Bold at 700, each with an italic.
The italics are livelier than you’d guess from a corporate face, and in the Condensed they keep almost exactly the width of the upright, so you can italicize a column entry without it spilling over. There are 5 stylistic sets and a slashed zero, which helps when an ID or a serial number has both O and 0 in it. Vietnamese is covered. Below Light, I’d keep it to big sizes; Thin in a condensed width goes brittle fast at 12 px.
