This is the narrowest of the 4 Sofia Sans widths, the family Lettersoup first drew for the Bulgarian capital and then spread across extended Latin, Greek and Cyrillic.
Botio Nikoltchev and Ani Petrova built it on the bones of early 20th century technical sans serifs, all vertical push and tense curves, then took the edge off: humanist touches, and corners blunted a little, the way letters printed from hot metal never came out razor sharp.
How narrow? A line of it runs about 39% shorter than the same words in Arial, and that is the whole reason to pick this width. Tall headlines in a skinny column, timetables, sports scores, a slim front panel on a box.
The family is deep for a condensed cut: 18 styles from Thin to Black, each with an italic that keeps almost the roman’s width. Small caps, tabular figures, fractions and 2 stylistic sets sit in the OpenType tables, and the designers mention arrows and circled numerals in the wider character set.
