Iceland’s capitals are heavier than its lowercase, an old typographic habit Victor Kharyk kept on purpose. It makes the 2 cases easy to tell apart, and it means you can scale the capitals down and use them as stand-in small caps.

The lineage runs back to Eurostile, the 1952 family by Aldo Novarese and Alessandro Butti that set the template for geometric type with a 1950s machine look. Kharyk’s take, drawn for Cyreal in 2011, is square and modular, with a cold, brutal character, and it was meant to work on screens down to low resolutions. So the strokes stay vertical, the diagonal cuts are all at 45 degrees, and the outlines are rounded. Letters like k, f and r were simplified to help at small sizes, and at large sizes the same shapes look crisp.

1 Regular, 216 characters, basic Latin. The squarish proportions drop into a modular grid or a logotype without fuss.
