Lekton was drawn in 8 hours. Students at ISIA Urbino in Italy, Luna Castroni, Stefano Faoro, Emilio Macchia, Elena Papassissa, Michela Povoleri and Tobias Seemiller, sat down with their teacher Luciano Perondi (who signs himself galacticus ineffabilis) and made the first version in a working day, starting from the typefaces on Olivetti typewriters. By the time it reached Google Fonts in December 2010 the credit list had grown to 17 names.

The clever part is the spacing. Strictly speaking it is not a single-width font: the team made the glyphs what they called trispaced, sitting on modular widths of 250, 500 or 750 units. That spaces the letters better than a true monospace can while still letting characters line up in columns, typewriter fashion. The designers thought they had come up with something new, then found Olivetti typewriters running the Margherita had done it already.

There is more here than a typewriter ever had, though. Swashes, small caps, old style figures, discretionary ligatures and 8 stylistic sets, across Regular, Italic and Bold.

We would try it on a poem, a screenplay or a zine before putting it in a code editor. The typewriter voice is why you pick it, and those features pay off in text people read.
